Tish Hinojosa’s music crosses borders between cultures, languages and musical genres, moving with equal grace through folk, country, pop and latino styles. She grew up listening to the traditional Mexican songs. In the late 1970’s she discovered her love for heartfelt country music and began writing her own songs. She’s worked with Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Pete Seeger, Flaco Jimenez and Los Lobos. Her new album, After the Fair, includes originals and “Me Captivo Con Su Mirar (A Certain Softness),” a cover of a Paul McCartney song, sung in Spanish. Joel Rafael has chronicled the world around him with songwriting rooted in folk tradition. Influenced by Woody Guthrie, Joel composed music for five sets of Guthrie lyrics given to him by Woody’s daughter Nora, and two of his co-writes with Guthrie appear in Every 100 Years—The Woody Guthrie Song Book. Joel first began performing in showcases and small clubs around Southern California. He formed a duo with Rosie Flores in 1978, enjoying standing-room-only crowds during their brief collaboration, and local promoters sought him as an opener for Rick Danko, Emmy Lou Harris, John Lee Hooker, Laura Nyro, and Taj Majal. He performs at festivals around the country. Listen to a track from Tish Hinojosa: Tish Hinojosa photo by Gunnar Geller Joel Rafael photo by Pino Bertelli |
