Steep Canyon RangersThe Steep Canyon Rangers represent the bluegrass big time. The International Bluegrass Music Association named them Entertainer of the Year, along with their occasional collaborator, Steve Martin, in 2011. Their seventh album, Rare Bird Alert, recorded with Steve, received a Grammy nomination in 2012. Their eighth album, Nobody Knows You, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album last year, and their new album, Tell the Ones I Love You, has received rave reviews. “As usual,” says the website PopMatters, “the record confirms the Rangers as musicians of the first order, specializing in instrumental dexterity, tight vocal harmonizing, and superb original material.”

The band features Charles Humphrey III on upright bass, Graham Sharp on banjo, Mike Guggino on mandolin, Nicky Sanders on fiddle, and Woody Platt on guitar. Charles and Graham write most of the songs. The band takes an original, freewheeling, high-energy approach to bluegrass, respecting tradition without being restrained by its conventions. These days you can catch them on PBS as part of the Great Performances series, with Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. “True bluegrass, when done well, is a thing of art and the Steep Canyon Rangers are the genre’s current Rembrandt,” says Examiner.com. How often do you get a chance to see Rembrandt play bluegrass?
