Regional Greek Violin Technique w/ Aya Davidson
Mondays, 8:30-9:45 pm, beginning May 8
Violin is the primary melodic instrument of Greek music, so there are many different regional styles and techniques. The goal of this class is for students to learn basic violin techniques from distinct regions across Greece.
We will go over five tunes from five different regions, one tune per class, and have a day of review on the sixth day. We will go over rhythm and bowing, ornamentation, and a little introduction to maqam and the importance of moria.
This is an intermediate to advanced violin class, but experience with Greek music is not required.
Aya Safiya started studying violin - both western classical and Greek - at age 7. She studied classical violin through the Suzuki School of Music with a number of different teachers such as Robin Reid. She studied traditional Greek violin with her father as well as other teachers, including Ari Langer and Beth Cohen.
At 15 Aya started teaching individual lessons and group workshops both in the Bay Area as well as at Music Camps.
At 17 Aya started making trips to Greece to study with violinists such as Nicos Chatzopoulos, Nikos Oikonomidhis, and many others. She has brought back what she learned there to share with her students here in the United States.
