Nora Jane StruthersNora Jane Struthers arrives at the Freight with a new album, Carnival, high on the Americana charts, and a powerhouse band, Party Line, along with a slew of great new original songs. Nora Jane grew up in Virginia, studied at NYU, and taught English in Brooklyn before moving to Nashville to focus full time on music. Bluegrass Unlimited called her first solo album, recorded in 2010, “a marvel that combines brilliant songcraft, a sultry yet honey-hued voice, and an inspired sense of personal musical style.” The reviewer for Bluegrass Breakdown called it “one of the most mesmerizing, haunting, and hard-hitting projects I’ve ever heard.” The new album ups the ante with a carnival of songs that tell memorable stories about a range of compelling characters. Nora Jane’s band, which won recognition as best band at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, features her longtime collaborator P. J. George on upright bass, pedal steel guitar, accordion, banjo, and harmony vocals, Joe Overton on clawhammer banjo and harmony vocals, Aaron Jonah Lewis on fiddle, three-finger banjo, baritone fiddle, and mandolin, and Drew Lawhorn on drums. What else? Nora Jane happens to be a great dresser with a wonderful collection of vintage clothes, and her band happens to have serious hambone skills – but it’s the songs and the singing and the terrific musicianship that will leave you humming.

Melody Walker & Jacob GroopmanHailing from the San Francisco Bay Area and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, respectively, singer-songwriter Melody Walker and picker extraordinaire Jacob Groopman have fused their influences into a style they like to call “Americali.” They define it as Americana with a California twist, but of course, it’s much more. Drawing from diverse genres and provocative songwriting yet staying close to their American folk roots, the duo create literate music that honors tradition, yet sounds completely of the moment.

Heading into an exciting summer festival season Melody and Jacob have formed their own bluegrass style four-piece band. No Lonesome is comprised of some of the finest folk and bluegrass players in the Bay Area, with Melody Walker up front on guitar and vocals, Jacob Groopman on mandolin, award-winning banjo master Bill Evans, and Paul Knight (of Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band) on bass. Melody Walker & No Lonesome bring the joyful rhythms of bluegrass to the sensibilities of progressive indie-folk, with tight trio harmonies and songs that leave you clapping and singing along.
