Born in a family of singers, he was introduced to the Hawaiian lap steel guitar as a toddler, later studying with Indian slide guitar legend Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, as well as vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty and Ali Akbar Khan. He was given the President of India award at the age of 21. He invented the "Trinity of Guitars", hollow-necked instruments unique to his compositions, and has collaborated with John McLaughlin (as part of Remember Shakti featuring Zakir Hussain), Martin Simpson, Liu Fang (China), and Bob Brozman with whom he released Mahima (2003), an album fusing Hawaiian and Indian music. His latest CD is Calcutta Chronicles (2009). Join us at the Freight tonight and hear for yourself why his originality and musical genius have earned him global admiration.
