There are several ways you can support traditional music as we present it at the Freight and Salvage.
Attend performances

Of course the first way to support the Freight is to come to performances. See Home and look near the top of the page for the monthly schedules. You can also sign on our Mail & Email Lists page to receive a printed monthly calendar in advance or email updates.


Become a member of the Freight

Join the "Friends of the Freight" and receive the following premiums:

$30 - priority mailing of the Freight calendar
$50 - $1 per show discount (one year, for two people)
$160 - discount plus two tickets $300 - discount plus five tickets
$500 or more - discount plus additional tickets
Life membership $6,000 - more information .

Planned giving

Planned giving refers to bequests, other estate gifts, and other deferred gifts and provides for your legacy of support. Please visit our planned giving website section to see stories and illustrations of gift options, including gifts that provide the donor (and a beneficiary if desired) with income for life. Planned giving has a good degree of flexibility and can leave a legacy of support for traditional music and a vibrant community arts organization.


Make a gift of stock

If you own stock, it is sometimes "tax-wise" to contribute stock rather than cash. A gift of appreciated stock generally offers a two-fold tax advantage. You avoid paying capital gains tax on the increased value of the stock, and you receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value at the time of the gift. Recognize someone special with a tribute gift

Honor someone special -- or someone whose memory you hold dear -- by giving a gift in his or her name to the Freight. Whether it be a friend or a family member, your generous gift expresses a genuine commitment to traditional music. Volunteer

We are grateful for the many volunteers that help out the Freight. Please contact us for details of how you can volunteer.


The Freight & Salvage Coffee House is a community-based, nonprofit organization that needs your support to continue to flourish. Our founders wanted to establish an enduring nonprofit institution because they realized that our mission -- promoting the understanding and appreciation of traditional music -- was too important to be purely profit motivated. That is why, in good times and in bad, we rely upon contributions and grants to meet the 15 percent of our budget set aside for capital upgrades, improvements, and community outreach efforts.


Thanks to your strong support, we have been able to:
  • Present outstanding artists rooted in music traditions from throughout the world
  • Augment our community outreach to diverse individuals and groups
  • Upgrade our sound equipment, performing stage, and physical plant
  • Expand our calendar of events to its present six page format.

    Since we opened our door in June of 1968, the Freight has been a vibrant part of the cultural landscape. Help us continue the work that earned our organization a first place standing in the San Francisco Chronicle "Reader's Choice" poll and a Goldie (Guardian Outstanding Local Discovery) award from the Bay Guardian.
