A gathering of greats performs tonight at the Freight in a benefit for the Breast Cancer Fund. An all-star lineup of illustrious women will sing and play in various combinations. Come on down and hear these Freight favorites – and world favorites! – make beautiful music for a worthy cause.

The Breast Cancer Fund works to connect the dots between breast cancer and exposure to chemicals and radiation in our everyday environments, studying the growing body of scientific evidence, incorporating the latest findings into public education and advocacy campaigns, working to transform the way our society employs chemicals and radiation, and helping in the search for practical solutions to promote good health and reduce breast cancer risk so that our children and our planet can thrive.

Holly Near has been making beautiful music and working for worthy causes for more than 40 years. Her music has been a touchstone for more than one political movement and more than one generation of listeners. She brings to the stage a unique combination of highly trained vocal power, delightful humor, and poetic reflection.

Barbara Higbie is a master of piano and fiddle who composes lovelyl music and sings like a dream. In the words of the Los Angeles Times, she’s a “jolt of bright sunlight” – and everyone in the audience feels her warmth.

Singer and songwriter, teacher and activist, Jennifer Berezan has a decades-long history of making music that blends her political commitment and spiritual sensitivity with her inspiring voice and intrepid guitar playing.

Terry Garthwaite co-founded the groundbreaking Berkeley rock band Joy of Cooking and has produced recordings for a host of talented performers, including Rhiannon, Ferron, and Rosalie Sorrels.

Deirdre McCalla released her first album, Fur Coats and Blue Jeans, when she was 19, playing clubs in Greenwich Village alongside artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs, and she went on to record three fine albums with Olivia Records.

Chris Webster is known for her bluesy, jazzy, soulful vocals. Her magic, says the Oakland Tribune, “derives from those ineffable qualities of vocal grain, emotional nuance, timing, and phrasing possessed by the truly great and moving singers of any style.”

Renee Harcourt, of Blame Sally fame, sings and plays guitar, bass, banjo, and harmonica. She’s a terrific singer and a charismatic performer, full of charm, wit, and warmth.

Eve Decker was a founding member of Rebecca Riots (named Best Band With A Conscience by the San Francisco Bay Guardian) and has since released three solo albums incorporating her Buddhist practice into what she calls "dharma folk." KALW host Kevin Vance says Eve plays, "a kind of music that makes the world a better place."

Robin Flower has played with an array of legendary musicians, including finger-picking legend Elizabeth Cotton and old-time music stars Hazel and Alice. She recorded four albums as leader of the Robin Flower Band and has co-created an enduring musical partnership with Libby McLaren.

Libby played in several bands before teaming up with Robin, including the cutting edge Latin jazz fusion band Night Flyte in the 1970s, The Longhouse and the Joy Askew Band in New York in the 1980s, and a five-year stint with The Roches.

Sharon & Susan Washington recorded a wonderful album, Understated, at Fantasy Records back in 1987 and have made a substantial contribution to women’s music.
