Fish & BirdFish & Bird, a five-piece indie-folk band from Victoria, British Columbia, explores the exciting musical territory between established tradition and reckless creativity. The band has a taste for vocal improv, 11/8 time, moody originals, and murder ballads that rock. Their latest album, Every Whisper Is a Shout Across the Void, earned a nomination from the Western Canadian Music Awards for Roots Group Recording of the Year in 2011, and they have a new album in the works. Driftwood Magazine calls them “a new force to be reckoned with on Canada’s roots scene,” and the website Roots Music Canada calls them “a band full of feeling” and “a shout worth hearing.” The band features Taylor Ashton on vocals and banjo, Adam Iredale-Gray on vocals and fiddle, Ryan Boeur on guitar, Ben Kelly on drums, and Natalie Bohrn on vocals and upright bass.
The Lonely Heartstring Band is an acoustic quintet from Boston inspired by bluegrass and the music of the Beatles. In fact, the Boston Bluegrass Union declares, “this is what the Beatles would have sounded like if they had been a bluegrass band.” The quintet features George Clements on guitar, Patrick M'Gonigle on fiddle, Matt Witler on mandolin, Gabe Hirshfeld on banjo, and Charles Clements on bass. They got together at the Berklee College of Music, started playing all around New England, and last year released a self-titled EP.
