Playwright and actor Libby Skala, winner of the Best Solo Performer Award at the London Fringe Theatre Festival, presents her deeply personal one woman show, Felicitas, which tells the story of her great aunt Lizi, a powerful spirit who escaped the Third Reich to nurse babies and new parents in America. A celebration of love, discipline, and the nobility of a life in service, the show features Libby’s husband, Steven May, playing his own original compositions on mandolin. New York Theatre Now called the show “Charming! A beautiful tribute!” Simply Showbiz called it “powerful, grand, and epic.” And BlogCritics praised the show for being “inspirational without syrup. A performance that engages our emotions, respects our intelligence, and leaves us feeling uplifted.” Janice L. Goldberg, recently awarded the Kennedy Center Gold Medallion Award for her work with new plays, is the director.

Libby Skala wowed Freight audiences in June with her performance in Lilia! The New York Times has praised her work as “magnetic,” “cloaked in magic,” and “deliciously poignant.” She grew up in New York City, graduated from Oberlin, and has written a trio of plays about her Oscar-nominated grandmother Lilia and her two great aunts, pioneering dancer Lisl and baby nurse Lizi. Says Byron Nilsson in Words and Music, Libby “once again has brought to life a fascinating character, the more fascinating because she was a woman who went up against the resistance of family, of society, and ultimately of a powerful enemy force, yet one who was able to make a difference in the lives of many. It’s one hell of a showcase for a performer.” This tender celebration of her great aunt’s extraordinary life promises to be an evening of exquisite theater.
