Over the Rhine 2016 Christmas Tour Thoughts

 

One December, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station. So we worked up a few carols and traditional tunes. It actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence, loss, wonder, joy, sadness. I think we were surprised.

He didn’t just hear Bill Monroe’s recordings – he played guitar and sang lead with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys in the mid-1960s. After stints in Earth Opera, Muleskinner, and the Marin County rock group Seatrain, he co-founded Old and in the Way with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Since then, he’s recorded more than 30 albums and earned six Grammy nominations.

One of the vanguards of the current gypsy jazz revival, Hot Club of San Francisco (HCSF) has integrated Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s jazz manouche style with their own disparate influences to create a unique sound of their own. HCSF is the brainchild of guitarist Paul Mehling, who after years of playing with the famed country swing bandleader Dan Hicks, went out on his own to form a gypsy jazz band.

Owner Bill Graham was so impressed with Lydia's voice and the sound of the band that he immediately signed Cold Blood to his new record label. During the span of six original late-60's, early-70's albums, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood helped, along with Tower Of Power, forge their own specific brand of funk/soul and R&B which came to be known as East Bay Grease.

Will Kimbrough is an American roots insider who grew up on Alabama’s gulf coast, honed his musical skills on the club circuit, moved to Nashville, and started working with folks like Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Little Feat, Steve Earle, and Jimmy Buffett who says,”Will can charm a crowd whether fronting a band, or playing solo. That's why you see his songs on my albums and his face on our stage.” The Americana Music Association named him Instrumentalist of the Year in 2004 for his playing on anything with strings.
