Come celebrate the birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach – he’d be turning a cool 331 this week – with some of the finest young musicians in the Bay Area and beyond! The Junior Bach Festival is enjoying its own 63rd birthday, having been founded in Berkeley in 1953 by music teacher and pianist Tirzah Mailkoff.

Start: 03/27/2016 7:00 pm

It’s a party for David Grisman, the master of the mandolin, celebrating the release of a new album as well as his birthday! David has played with everyone from Stephane Grapelli to Jerry Garcia, from Doc Watson to Hal Blaine. Tonight he returns to his swing jazz sweet spot, joined by an all-star lineup of stalwarts – George Cole on guitar, George Marsh on percussion, Matt Eakle on flute, Jim Kerwin on bass, and Chad Manning on fiddle – and perhaps a few special guests!

Kahulanui, which means the big dance, is an inspiration passed down from grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to father Rodgers L.L. Naipo, Sr., to Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr. Lolena remembers listening to his grandfather’s stories about playing in the Royal Hawaiian Band in an era when horns and drums were a big part of Hawaiian music. In the 1930s and 40s, Hawaiian swing got the whole house jumping. Today Kahulanui gives Hawaiian swing new life!

John GorkaJohn Gorka grabs you with his voice and holds you with his words. He has a stunningly soulful baritone and a sensibility that combines great playfulness with a remarkable depth of feeling. When he sings someone else’s song – Dylan’s “Girl of the North Country,” for instance – he molds it to the contours of his own musical vision. His originals are clever, but not just clever. They cut to the bone. In “I Saw a Stranger with Your Hair,” he asks, “By the way / how is my heart?
