Come celebrate the birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach – he’d be turning a cool 331 this week – with some of the finest young musicians in the Bay Area and beyond! The Junior Bach Festival is enjoying its own 63rd birthday, having been founded in Berkeley in 1953 by music teacher and pianist Tirzah Mailkoff.

It’s a party for David Grisman, the master of the mandolin, celebrating the release of a new album as well as his birthday! David has played with everyone from Stephane Grapelli to Jerry Garcia, from Doc Watson to Hal Blaine. Tonight he returns to his swing jazz sweet spot, joined by an all-star lineup of stalwarts – George Cole on guitar, George Marsh on percussion, Matt Eakle on flute, Jim Kerwin on bass, and Chad Manning on fiddle – and perhaps a few special guests!

Our Open Mic has brought in some of our brightest performers, including Shawn Colvin, Dana Carvey, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Patrick Landeza. The audience is friendly – and people actually listen! Kahulanui, which means the big dance, is an inspiration passed down from grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to father Rodgers L.L. Naipo, Sr., to Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr. Lolena remembers listening to his grandfather’s stories about playing in the Royal Hawaiian Band in an era when horns and drums were a big part of Hawaiian music. In the 1930s and 40s, Hawaiian swing got the whole house jumping. Today Kahulanui gives Hawaiian swing new life!

Rudy TrubittRudy Trubitt is the host of The Patchwork Series, now in it’s fifth year here at The Freight. In this solo show, Rudy will bring a mix of old and new songs for ears of all ages. Expect to do some dancing, some call-and-response and maybe even join in a conga-line around the Freight. And watch out for Little Chicken, Rudy’s recent single which reached #1 on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio’s Kid’s Place Live channel last summer.
