Berkeley High School Chamber Music ConcertCome hear an inspiring performance by the classical component of the world-renowned Berkeley High music program, a stunning showcase for its talented young players. The evening features an array of small groupings – from brass choir and string quartet to solos and duets–by musicians from Berkeley High School’s orchestra and band programs, under the direction of Karen Wells and Mary Dougherty.

Hailing from the home of the Hobbit movies, and sharing DNA with Flight of the Conchords (Bret McKenzie co-founded the group), the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra is renowned for its winning combination of charming Kiwi humor, disarmingly small instruments, and sublime musicality – a joyful formula that’s proved popular around the world. Bret won’t be appearing tonight, but the group’s sense of humor is entirely intact.

John Hammond is a blues wonder. He can do more with a guitar, a harmonica, and his voice than just about anyone around. And his roots go deep. He once had a band with both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. He’s played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, The Band before they were The Band, Dr. John, and John Lee Hooker.

Maria Quiles & Rory CloudQuiles & Cloud – that’s Maria Quiles and Rory Cloud – started playing together on the sidewalks of San Francisco in the fall of 2011 and something quickly clicked. “It was perfect timing for both of us,” Rory says. “We really connected on so many levels,” Maria says.

When John Sebastian had to cancel his evening at the Freight, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum jumped at the opportunity to put together a celebration of the music of John Sebastian and the Lovin' Spoonful, as well as some of the music that influenced John, who wrote such classics as “Do You Believe in Magic,” “Daydream,” and “Summer in the City.” Laurie and Tom enlisted the help of the great Seattle-based duo, Orville Johnson and Mark Graham, known as The Kings of Mongrel Folk.

Lisa Ferraro & Erika LuckettLisa Ferraro & Erika Luckett are intent on amplifying the goodness, joy, and nourishment in the world. Lisa is a soulful jazz vocalist who grew up in Pittsburgh and has worked with such artists as Marvin Hamlisch, Hendrick Merkins, Roger Humphries, and Julie Bonk. Erika is an award-winning singer-songwriter and innovative guitarist who was born in Mexico and grew up in South America.
