Tony Unger, Ed Labowitz, and Mike Sirota grew up in the ’60s, when they fell in love with the story songs and three-part harmonies of that acoustic era. Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School, and Mike joined the group in 2003. Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages.

Naipo, Sr., to Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr. Lolena remembers listening to his grandfather’s stories about playing in the Royal Hawaiian Band in an era when horns and drums were a big part of Hawaiian music. In the 1930s and 40s, Hawaiian swing got the whole house jumping. Today Kahulanui gives Hawaiian swing new life!

Fiddle guru Darol Anger calls Bruce Molsky “the Rembrandt of the Appalachian fiddle.” Matt Glaser, director of the American Roots program at the Berklee College of Music, calls him “America’s reigning old time fiddler.” Bruce is a master fiddler who also excels on banjo and guitar. Oh, and he sings, too. “Bruce has that ability to track deep emotion in his voice, without any unnecessary adornment,” says Linda Rondstadt, who knows a bit about singing herself.

Söndörgó (pronounced “Shoen-doer-go”) plays music in the Southern Slavic traditions of the Serbs and Croats as found in various settlements in Hungary. It’s thrilling, high-energy music that’s quite different from the more familiar fiddle-led Hungarian folk repertoire. Featuring Áron Eredics, Benjamin Eredics, Dávid Eredics, Salamon Eredics and Attila Buzás, the group formed near Budapest in 1995 and have spent the last two decades researching, arranging, and performing Southern Slav folk music.

Living Jazz is an Oakland-based nonprofit whose mission is to build community, cultivate creativity, and enrich lives by fostering the love of jazz.
