Box Set Duo TrioJeff Person and Jim Brunberg first started playing together in the early 1990s at The Owl and the Monkey Café in San Francisco’s Sunset District. Their band, Box Set, recorded seven albums and won Bay Area Music Awards for Best Club Band and Outstanding Americana/Roots Band, and a “Group of the Year” award from the National Academy of Songwriters. Real Vocal String QuartetChoose a box, any box, and the Real Vocal String Quartet will think outside of it. They’re a string quartet and a vocal quartet. They play Irish fiddle tunes and Brazilian choro, chamber music and wild improvisation. They backed up Feist on her indie-pop hit Metals, which Jon Pareles of the New York Times named his favorite album of 2011, and appeared with her on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Great performances at the 2014 International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass Conference propelled them on a three-month tour of America that took them to 43 states. Singer-songwriter Radney Foster grew up in Del Rio, Texas, not far from the Mexican border, moved to Nashville, where he’s lived for years, and recently recorded his tenth and latest album, Everything I Should Have Said, in Louisiana. His catchy country sound encompasses all those places, combining Nashville virtuosity with border-town spice and bayou tang. Kahulanui, which means the big dance, is an inspiration passed down from grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to father Rodgers L.L. Naipo, Sr., to Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr. Lolena remembers listening to his grandfather’s stories about playing in the Royal Hawaiian Band in an era when horns and drums were a big part of Hawaiian music. In the 1930s and 40s, Hawaiian swing got the whole house jumping. Today Kahulanui gives Hawaiian swing new life!

David Nelson (New Riders) and Eric Thompson (Kleptograss) in a rare duet show, with songs and stories going all the way back to their early 1960’s explorations with Jerry Garcia as the Black Mountain Boys. David Nelson went on to front the New Riders of the Purple Sage (still touring!) and Eric Thompson went on to explore many kinds of acoustic music with musicians like David Grisman, Mike Seeger, Laurie Lewis, etc.
