Crystal BowersoxCrystal Bowersox is an artful songwriter and a soulful singer with a warm alto capable of belting out a big ballad or gently coaxing a delicate melody. She gained fame on American Idol, finishing as the runner-up in 2010. Since then, she’s recorded two albums, Farmer’s Daughter and All That for This, produced by Steve Berlin, who has also produced albums for Los Lobos, Sheryl Crow, and John Lee Hooker. The Washington Post calls Crystal “bluesy and soulful, with a voice incapable of artifice.” The New York Times says, “She has a keen, finely honed pop instinct all her own.” She “expertly works the territory between folk and country,” according to the Chicago Tribune. “Her best moments are subtle, with a touch of twang and fragility.”
Crystal grew up in rural Ohio and moved to Chicago when she was 17, busking at train stations, playing open mics, doing the bad waitress thing. She went on an international café tour that took her to Mexico, Turkey, and Tennessee. The Idol experience gave her the chance to perform with Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker, and Alanis Morrisette. On her new album she sings a duet with Jakob Dylan. “The silvery residue from Idol has faded a bit,” she says, “and now it’s all about what’s true and real in my world.” Her world is sounding pretty good these days. Come to the Freight and take a listen.
