Cahalen Morrison has played some wonderful shows at the Freight with Eli West, and now he returns with a fine new band, Country Hammer, and a terrific new album, The Flower of Muscle Shoals, which No Depression calls “deeply satisfying” and full of “great country & western music.” Cahalen, who hails from the high desert of northern New Mexico and now lives in the Pacific Northwest, writes songs that capture the essence of old time country. With Jim Miller and Rob Adesso on Telecaster and harmony vocals, Ethan Lawton on drums, Mary Maass on fiddle, Country Dave Harmonson on pedal steel, Michael Connolly on bass, and Cahalen on guitar and lead vocals, the band delivers its own quirky take on classic country, honky tonk, and rhythm and blues.

SupermuleSupermule is a super group of superbly talented musicians who play a bluegrass-inflected mix of catchy originals and cool covers from artists as diverse as Bill Withers and Bill Monroe. The San Francisco Chronicle calls them “much more than a great bluegrass outfit” and the California Bluegrass Association praises their “tasty blend of fresh, rootsy ingredients. Liberal amounts of jazz, bluegrass, classical, and rock are used in varying proportions.” Their debut EP, Northern White Clouds, has a “groovy country sound,” according to the East Bay Express. The band features Yoseff Tucker on guitar and vocals, Jim Chayka on banjo, Alisa Rose on violin, Mike Emerson on keyboards, Zach Sharpe on bass, and Rich Armstrong on a wealth of instruments. With traditional roots and revolutionary zeal, Supermule makes music that keeps on kicking!
