Balkan, Albanian & Greek Singing w/ Aya Davidson
Tuesdays, 8:00-9:15 pm, beginning March 7
This vocal class is designed for people who are interested in stepping into or diving deeper into the world of Balkan, Albanian, and Greek singing. It is geared toward both beginners and intermediate students. The goal is for students to add a variety of beautiful songs to their repertoire, to learn technique which makes Balkan, Albanian, and Greek singing what they are, and to have fun! We will go over five songs, one song per class, and have a day of review on the sixth day. Four songs will be polyphonic. We will go over pronunciation, melody, how layers are made in this style of music, the importance of dissonance and resolution, and minor ornamentation. The fifth song will be monophonic and we will go over pronunciation, melody, the importance of “moria” or microtones, and ornamentation more in depth.
Aya Davidson grew up in a musical family and in the Bay Area Balkan and Middle Eastern music community, and has been singing Greek music for as long as she can remember. Gradually she added Albanian and other Balkan music to her repertoire. At 18 Aya started teaching vocal classes at music camps and private workshops. Over the past decade Aya has made long visits to Italy, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey to study music. She brings back what she learned to share with her students here in the Bay Area.
